Lulu’s Thoughts:

Success is either attributed to achieving a goal, or from the perspective of social status.

Whether someone is successful or not in achieving their goals can be simplified to a 3 part balance of motivation, ability, and opportunity.

Rather than existing on a dichotomy, like a light switch on or off, people are not merely successful or unsuccessful. In reality the success of an individual depends on what they were working toward (goal & intent) as well as the social norms and values of the person passing judgment.

Understanding success in relation to social status is a complex process involving perspectives, cultures, achieved and ascribed status. This is an important relationship to understand, but I will dive further into this within the context of achieving a goal.

The three factors I believe contribute to one’s level of success are:

Motivation  x  Opportunity  x  Ability

How it Works:

For someone born a privileged life, they may have all the opportunity to do whatever they want, and all the ability and resources to see it done. However, without the proper motivation to achieve the goal the extent of their potential will never be fully realized.

For someone born a moderately privileged life, they may have substantial ability due to their education that enables them to act, and moderate resources. However, for the average citizen there are many barriers preventing access to all the potential opportunities. If they are motivated enough they may overcome these obstacles, but if their motivation is lacking it is unlikely they will overcome all the hindrances to their success.

For someone born a moderate to severely disadvantaged life, they may have developed a strong motivation to succeed and overcome their barriers. However, with limited resources, little to no education, and limited to no opportunities due to social status, it came be very hard to accomplish goals.

2013: A Year for Success

Over the next year, I’ll be discussing various barriers to success, and how to overcome them. If these three factors, Motivation – Opportunity – Ability, are what contribute to our success, than if we learn to control these factors we can begin to control our own success. Covering two sections a month, these are the topics I’ll be discussing over the next year.
